The constitutional amendment on the 2022 primary ballot could have paved the way for a total ban on abortion in Kansas. But voters rejected the amendment by a vote of nearly 60%, proving once again that Kansans across the political spectrum believe in personal liberty and freedom. Now, our task is to protect our rights and ensure politicians don’t reverse the will of the people. Onward!

How We Got Here

now:

Kansans have a constitutional right to abortion, but politicians in Topeka continue attempting to restrict access to abortion and ignore the will of the voters.

August 2022:

By a vote of 59%, Kansans defeated the constitutional amendment and affirmed that abortion should be safe, legal, and accessible.

January 2021:

Politicians in Topeka voted to approve an unnecessary constitutional amendment and put it on the August 2, 2022 primary ballot, despite objections from a bipartisan coalition of moderate legislators.

These same anti-abortion politicians and special interests have been slowly chipping away at reproductive rights in Kansas for the past two decades. It’s no secret that their goal is a total ban of abortion in Kansas.

November 2020:

The 2020 General Election changed the makeup of the Kansas Legislature.

MARCH 2020:

A bipartisan coalition of moderate lawmakers blocked the same unnecessary constitutional amendment that anti-abortion lobbyists had dubbed “Value them Both.” It did NOT in fact value either women or babies.

April 2019:

The Kansas Supreme Court ruled that the Kansas Constitution guarantees the right to “personal autonomy,” which includes a woman’s right to decide to have an abortion. The Court’s ruling prompted lobbyists & special interests to press for a constitutional amendment removing this right from the state constitution.

2000s:

Anti-abortion politicians pushed numerous bans on abortion, including excessive and burdensome regulations that were not medically necessary. Many restrictions were approved and abortion continues to be heavily regulated in Kansas.

Since 1973:

Anti-abortion activists have been trying for decades to overturn Roe vs. Wade and roll back access to safe, legal abortion.
