The constitutional amendment on the 2022 primary ballot will pave the way for a total ban on abortion in Kansas. It will hand our personal healthcare decisions over to politicians in Topeka.
Don’t be fooled, this is an unnecessary amendment to the Kansas Constitution. Kansas already regulates abortion, just as it would any medical procedure. This amendment is an attempt to give politicians in Topeka the power to go beyond reasonable regulation and ban abortion completely. KCF is working together to defeat the August 2, 2022 constitutional amendment.
Don’t be fooled. Vote No on the Ban.
How We Got Here
Politicians in Topeka voted to approve an unnecessary constitutional amendment and put it on the August 2, 2022 primary ballot, despite objections from a bipartisan coalition of moderate legislators.
These same anti-abortion politicians and special interests have been slowly chipping away at reproductive rights in Kansas for the past two decades. It’s no secret that their goal is a total ban of abortion in Kansas.
The 2020 General Election changed the makeup of the Kansas Legislature.
A bipartisan coalition of moderate lawmakers blocked the same unnecessary constitutional amendment that anti-abortion lobbyists had dubbed “Value them Both.” It does NOT in fact value either women or babies.
The Kansas Supreme Court ruled that the Kansas Constitution guarantees the right to “personal autonomy,” which includes a woman’s right to decide to have an abortion. The Court’s ruling prompted lobbyists & special interests to press for a constitutional amendment removing this right from the state constitution.
Anti-abortion politicians pushed numerous bans on abortion, including excessive and burdensome regulations that were not medically necessary. Many restrictions were approved and abortion continues to be heavily regulated in Kansas. That will not change even if this amendment is defeated.
Anti-abortion activists have been trying for decades to overturn Roe vs. Wade and roll back access to safe, legal abortion.
